Some of my favorite Mac apps.

So a few people I know are getting Macs for the first time and I thought I'd post a few of my favorite Mac apps (fun apps, not so much productivity apps).

In no particular order:

  1. Library Books: http://haroldchu.id.au/?q=node/2. Netflix style queue for the public library. Free
  2. Firefox (obviously) http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox
  3. iTivo: lets you download shows from a Series 2 Tivo and convert to iPod/iPhone format. Free
  4. Join Together and Chapterize: lets you join several audio files (like from an audio book) and join them together with chapter markers: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/jointogether.php. Free
  5. EyeTV: record and watch over the air hi Def TV on your Mac, convert to iPod/iPhone format. $40/$150 with TV tuner
  6. Path Finder: OS X finder on roids. Coverflow, terminal intergration and the best part: tabs with a drawer to hold files you want to copy to another folder. http://cocoatech.com/ approx. $30
  7. Quicksilver: app and web page launcher (and that just scratches the surface). http://docs.blacktree.com/quicksilver/what_is_quicksilver. Free
  8. Boxee: well you just have to try it: http://boxee.tv/ Free
  9. SimplifyMedia: access your music on your computer from an iPhone/iPod remotely: http://www.simplifymedia.com/

Mac Software

Here are some of my favorites:

• Keynote - I can not say enough about how useful this program it is. Not only can you make beautiful presentations, but you can export really nice multimedia. I even sometimes use it to build flow charts.

• OmniGraffle is an outstanding application for building flow-charts of all sorts. If you build a lot of these (including visual depictions of web site content organization) this a very worthwhile app.

• Candybar is a really fun application to change the appearance of all your system icons (and the even look of the dock). It is available from iconfactory who has tons of great free icon sets.
