Drupal 6 is here!

Drupal 6 was released this last week. I've been checking it out through the betas and release candidate releases. Its a soid release with something for everyone.

Developers get under the hood improvements like a new streamlined version of the Form API.

Themers and designers see great strides in creating new themes in Drupal. The Devel module for Drupal 6 has a fantastic Firebug-like widget to make theming easier than ever. Its now possible to create pure CSS based themes in a straight forward way.

End users get what is arguably the easiest installer for a CMS ever. If you know your database name and password for Mysql, you can install Drupal in five minutes or less. OpenID support help cure the I forgot my password for the 700th website I registered for this week syndrome.

Although many key Drupal modules are not yet ready for the new version, they will fall into line soon and make Drupal 6 the best release by far to date.

Seeing what's on the docket for Drupal 7 (http://buytaert.net/starting-to-work-on-drupal-7) the future looks bright for Drupal.

D6 is a cool release full of new ideas (menu system) but it's a hard job to upgrade your D5 modules!
It's pretty difficult to figure out all the necessary changes - not at least because of the nature of PHP (to be not type-secure) and the nature of the Drupal engine (to call functions indirect by concatenating words for hooks).
You definitely need the latest coder.module!
And you should read the modules upgrade guide "some" times...

Cheers, Gregor.

Drupal attracts more users.

Drupal attracts more users. In other words, making a better product translates to a bigger install base. Every major Drupal release asserts this observation. It took me a couple years to realize that it was actually that simple a formula. Thus, I'm confident that the l10n and i18n improvements in Drupal 6 will convince many more people to use Drupal.
